News and notes

Thursday November 30th: The menial tasks of the day, and Happy Birthday Bro!

Happy birthday to my Bro! That’s me, the good looking one on the left, and my older brother on the right. Today he magically becomes TWO years older than me!

So happy birthday brother. I hope it’s a great day, and that your students don’t hound you too much about your elderlyness.

And most importantly, I hope you can find your way home at the end of the day!!

Now, the news:

It appears that the GOP has got just enough votes now to pass the tax-cut bill which was passed by the House a few weeks ago. The last hold-out, Senator John McCain appears to have been convinced to support the new law, which would reduce the corporate tax rate from the current level of 35%(the highest in the world, BTW) to 20%. The stock market has soared above 24,000 on the news, and this would be considered the first major legislative victory for President Donald Trump after several frustrating betrayals by Arizona’s  Senator McCain, Alaska’s Lisa Murkowsi and Maine’s Susan Collins.

Also in the news,

Hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons is apparently in a lot of hot water over very specific allegations of raping the daughter of filmmaker Sidney Lumet. The very descriptive story was told by Jenny Lumet on the website for The Hollywood Reporter.

And a really concerning story is developing: Researchers have found an imbalance in the brain chemistry of young people addicted to smartphones and the internet, according to a study presented today at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA).
